Antlers

Merry Christmas!

Did you know . . . . . that antler growth depends on many things? antlers  grow every year, then drop off, or shed, once a year.  However; how big the antlers get, and the thickness of these antlers, whether they are whitetail, elk, or moose, depends on many things.

Big antlers require lots of food, and not just any food, but food that is full of trace minerals from the soil.  minerals such as phosphorous and calcium are critical to antler growth.  Hormone imbalances also affect antler growth, as well as daylight.  In the spring when the days are longer,  hormones are released at peak which makes the antler grow.  In the fall & winter when daylight is short, hormones are released again triggering the live bone in the skull to separate from the dead bone of the antler.  This is knows as antler casting by shed hunters.   Antlerworx only uses antler sheds, and we never harvest antler.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous holiday season.
